My Recent Work.
As some of you may already be aware, a few years ago I was fortunate to be chosen as the winner of an international wildlife competition with a picture of a black and white "Mute Swan" bathing on a Cheshire canal in evening sunlight. "So what, no big deal" I can hear some of you saying However the first prize was not the traditional package of film or piece of equipment, but an all expenses paid trip to the Falkland Islands via Santiago in Chile. Ever since, I have always felt a very close relationship to Mute Swans.
A few weeks ago I started my daily watching routine on a swan who was sittiing on a clutch of 6 eggs. After a few days I visited the nest at around 7am one morning and to find the first egg starting to hatch. Within the following 5 hours another 4 had hatched. Unfortunately one failed.
At the end of the day, but only after thanking the parent swans for allowing me the privilege of being present throughout the birth of their young, I returned home very satisfied. It was a wonderful experience and site to see the cygnets hatching out of their shells and because the parent birds had got used to me visiting their nest, they where so calm and un-stressed. This is most certainly nature at its best.
Two days later and on one of my daily visits to see my swans, I arrived to find the family in amongst the reeds. Without any delay the male swan came over to see me complete with family and presented the 5 surviving cygnets to me. What an honour, what a thrill and just how humbling did this make me feel. All the early mornings where well worth the effort.
